Power-sharing talks between Zimbabwe's ruling party and opposition were expected to begin in earnest on Wednesday following the signing early this week of a memorandum of understanding setting out the daunting task ahead of the crisis negotiators.

Some observers expressed skepticism that the ruling ZANU-PF and opposition Movement for Democratic Change negotiating teams could address all of the issues on the table within the two weeks that have been allocated for coming up with a power-sharing agreement.

On 18 July, the world joined South Africans in celebrating the birthday of former President Nelson Mandela. Although it would be unfair to compare Mandela and Mugabe because the social, political and economic dynamics in South Africa and Zimbabwe are different, it cannot be denied that the circumstances and issues that propelled the two into leadership positions were the same.

MDC May Sign Initial Talks Agreement

Zimbabwe's main opposition party could sign an agreement as early as Monday to begin substantive talks with President Robert Mugabe's party on ending a political impasse that has worsened the country's severe economic crisis, opposition officials said on Saturday.

The apparent breakthrough came after South African President Thabo Mbeki proposed forming a team drawn from African regional bodies and the United Nations to help him mediate the worsening crisis in neighboring Zimbabwe.

As Zimbabwe lurches deeper into crisis this week, with an apparent stalemate in the tentative negotiations between the government and the opposition, the man who salvaged Kenya's political crisis earlier this year insisted a peace deal was 'doable'.

Nobel peace winner and former UN secretary general Kofi Annan told the Observer in an exclusive interview that there was a real possibility of a solution in Zimbabwe, but he was scathing about the plight the beleagured country's people had been left in, saying the worsening situation there "shamed Africa".

Negotiations to resolve Zimbabwe's deep political crisis have stalled after opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai refused to sign a framework for talks, his party said on Thursday.

Both Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change and the ruling ZANU-PF party of President Robert Mugabe are under strong African and world pressure to negotiate after the widely condemned re-election of Mugabe last month.

PRESIDENT Thabo Mbeki is expected to fly to Zimbabwe today to witness the signing of a crucial deal between parties locked in power-sharing talks.

The move, if not scuttled at the 11th hour as consultations were taking place late last night, would pave the way for focused talks between main political parties engaged in talks on a government of national unity.

Mbeki, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) mediator in Zimbabwe, is expected to oversee the signing of the deal-

ZIMBABWE'S permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Boniface Chidyausiku, yesterday expressed dissatisfaction with the partial manner in which the world body, especially the Secretary-General, Mr Ban Ki-Moon, is handling the Zimbabwean issue.

Ambassador Chidyausiku was speaking after the United States-led push for a Security Council resolution on Washington's draft sanctions against Zimbabwe was put aside as the organ had to deal with the killing of seven UN and African Union peacekeepers in the Darfur region.
